Nobel Prize-winner in Medicine (1980), signs a typewritten 1986 letter informing a collector that he composes all his drafts on a word processor.
Typed Letter signed: "Baruj Benacerraf", 1 page, 8¼x11. Boston, Massachusetts, 1986 January 16. On letterhead of Harvard Medical School Department of Pathology to Karl Heinz Fleitmann, Bochum, West Germany. In full: "I would like to thank you for your letter in which you request a handwritten copy of one of my manuscripts. For quite some time now, I have not handwritten any of my manuscripts, rather, this is done through the word processor. I sincerely regret that I am not able to comply with your request. Sincerely". Accompanied by matching envelope 9½x4 with typed address to same addressee, with Boston metered postage on same date. Benacerraf, who attained the Fabyan Chair of Comparative Pathology at Harvard in 1970, was co-recipient of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with George Shell and Jean Dausset for discoveries concerning the genetic regulation of the body's immune system. Benacerraf, a Venezuelan-born scientist, who had joined the faculty of the New York School of Medicine in 1956, was a professor in pathology there by 1960. From 1968-1970, Benacerraf was the chief of the immunologic laboratory of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health. Fine condition.
