The record had stood for 34 years, and Maris still holds the A.L. record for most home runs in one season. His 37-year-old major league record was broken in 1998 by National Leaguer Mark McGwire (70) and McGwire's record was broken three years later by National Leaguer Barry Bonds (73). Maris was named the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1961 for the second consecutive time (1960, 1961), and he was also a member of the All-Star team (the third of his four appearances - 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1962). The Gillette Cavalcade of Sports was televised on NBC from 1948-1960. While the Friday night show always showed boxing matches, the remainder of the hour was filled with features such as "Great Moments in Sports" or "Red Barber's Corner".

On July 31, 1990, at Milwaukee's County Stadium, Texas Rangers right hander Nolan Ryan added to his list of legendary mound accomplishments by becoming the 20th pitcher in Major League history to record at least 300 wins during his career. Ryan worked seven and two-thirds innings that night, allowing one earned run and striking out eight. The tying runs were on base in a 5-3 game when Texas manager Bobby Valentine took Ryan out after he had thrown 146 pitches. JOE DiMAGGIO (1914-1999) played centerfield for the New York Yankees from 1936-1942 and 1946-1951 with a lifetime batting average of .325. The Hall of Famer was elected to the All-Star team every year, was American League batting champion in 1939 and 1940 and home run leader in 1948. He holds the major league consecutive game-hitting streak of 56 (1941); called baseball's greatest feat by many. He was Most Valuable Player in 1939, 1941, and 1947.
