BASIL RATHBONE. Typed DS: "Basil Rathbone" under "Agreed and Accepted", 1p, 7¼x9¼. New York City, 1964 December 19. Signed at the lower margin of a letter from Harris & Weinstein Associates, Advertising Counselors, Atlanta, Georgia to Rathbone in New York. The letter concerns the use of commercials made by Rathbone earlier in the year. Begins: "Dear Mr. Rathbone". In full: "The following, when executed by you, will constitute a valid and binding agreement between us. 1. We agree to pay you the sum of Fifteen Hundred ($1,500.00) Dollars for your permission to use the Getz Exterminators Television and Radio spots in which you appear. These spots were produced on January 7, 1964. Said sum to be paid prior to January 9, 1965, check to be made payable to Robert Sanford, Agent. 2. Said commercials to be used until December 31, 1965. If the above is in accordance with your understanding, kindly indicate your consent by signing in the space provided below. Sincerely". Also signed: "Abe Weinstein" for Harris & Weinstein Associates. Matted with a photograph, b/w, 7¼x9¼, to 19½x13½, not in the Gallery of History style. In 1964, Rathbone appeared in one feature film, The Comedy of Terrors, and was seen in an episode of the TV series, Dr. Kildare. The following year, during the term of this contract, Rathbone appeared in Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet and was seen on the small screen in an episode of Burke's Law and another episode of Dr. Kildare. British actor Basil Rathbone (1892-1967), who appeared on Broadway 23 times and won the 1948 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play (The Heiress), is also known for his film work in period costume dramas. He was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor for playing Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet (1936) and King Louis XVI in If I Were King (1938). He also appeared as Murdstone in David Copperfield (1934), Evremonde in Tale of Two Cities (1935), Pontius Pilate in The Last Days of Pompeii (1936), Karenin in Anna Karenina (1936) and Guy of Gisbourne in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). In 1939, Rathbone was cast as Sherlock Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles, the first of 14 screen appearances as Conan Doyle's master detective. He also played Holmes on radio from 1939-1946. Lightly creased with folds, not at signatures. Pinhead-size impression at upper left corner of mat. Fine condition.
