B/w 8x10. The 1987 film *batteries not included is a
family science fiction film directed by Mathew Robins and distributed by
Universal Pictures. It is about small extraterrestrial living machines that save
a New York City apartment block under threat from property development. Hume
Cronyn plays Frank Riley, husband of Faye Riley, played by Jessica Tandy. The
two own a café in the apartment block. It debuted at No. 4 at the box office.
Jessica Tandy (1909-1994) was among the grand dames
of stage and screen. She earned Tony awards for the premier of A Streetcar
Named Desire (1947) and The Gin Game (1978). She won an Oscar as Best
Actress for Driving Miss Daisy (1989), and won her third Tony for her
work in 1983's Foxfire (she would win an Emmy in 1987 for the same role
in the play's televised version). In 1942, she married Canadian stage and
screen actor Hume Cronyn and they remained professional and personal partners
until Tandy's death in 1994. Canadian actor Hume Cronyn (1911-2003)
entered film in 1943 and was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor
the following year for The Seventh Cross. He worked frequently
with Alfred Hitchcock, adapting plays and novels for the screen and acting
in both Hitchcock films and TV episodes. Married to Oscar-winning actress
Jessica Tandy from 1942 until her death in 1994, Cronyn co-starred often
with her. The couple was especially popular as married senior citizens in
such films as Cocoon (1985), as well as the stage and TV versions of
The Gin Game. Cronyn remained active after Jessica's death, being
mistaken for Santa Claus in Off Season (2001). The photo shares the 8x10
page with a photograph for 1988 American comedy. Switching Channels Fine
