BEHOLD MY WIFE MOVIE CAST: GENE RAYMOND & SYLVIA SIDNEY
Gene Raymond and Sylvia Sidney sign a black and white publicity photograph from their movie Behold My Wife.
Photograph signed: "Kindest wishes/Gene Raymond" and "Best Wishes/Sylvia Sidney". B/w, 10x8. Scene from the 1934 drama. GENE RAYMOND (1908-1998) first appeared on stage at age 5 and on Broadway at age 12. Some of his best screen assignments include If I Had a Million (1932), Zoo in Budapest (1933), Flying Down to Rio (1933), Mr. and Mrs. Smith (1941) and The Best Man (1964). In 1948, Raymond produced, directed, co-wrote and starred in Million Dollar Weekend. A B-17 bomber pilot over Germany in World War II, he remained in the active reserves until 1968, long enough to fly airlifts in Vietnam, retire as a Colonel and win many decorations, including the Legion of Merit. He was married to actress Jeanette MacDonald from 1937 until her death in 1965. In almost all of her roles, SYLVIA SIDNEY (1910-1999) was typecast as a downtrodden, poor but proud girl of the lower classes -- a Depression-era heroine. Although she occasionally got parts that didn't conform to this type, her casting was so consistent that she had tired of film work by the late 1940s and began devoting herself increasingly to the stage. Sidney returned to the screen after a long absence to earn an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress in Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams (1973). Negative defects reproduced to photo. Sidney's signature smudged. Overall, fine condition.
