Postcard Photograph signed: "Bella Alten/Hamburg [phrase illegible]". Sepia, 3½x5½. Addressed in her hand to a woman in Hamburg, postmarked Hamburg, October 22, 1915. Operatic soprano Bella Alten(1877-1962) performed on German stages and at Covent Gardens before joining New York's Metropolitan Opera (1904-1914). She sang 34 roles at the Met, and was especially known for initiating the female lead in Hansel and Gretel. She married an Austrian banker, performing in Vienna through 1936. When Nazi Germany annexed Austria, she immigrated to London. Heavily toned, soiled and silvered. Signature faded and beaded. Corners worn. Surface creases from stamp imprint. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso.
