BELLA DARVI
7x9 photo of the troubled actress, with an inscription in French. Extremely rare!
Photograph inscribed and signed: In French, loosely translated, "For John Bernie, the champion of high fashion, with my best regards and friendly remembrances/Bella Darvi". B/w 7x9. Bella Darvi (1928-1971), born Bayla Wegier in Poland, survived a Nazi concentration camp, moving to Monaca after the war. She was discovered by Virginia Fox, wife of producer Daryl Zanuck, moved into the Zanuck home in Hollywood, and was renamed Bella Darvi, the last name a contraction of Daryl and Virginia. Darvi was cast opposite three major male stars in films of 1954-1955, Hell and High Water (with Richard Widmark), The Racers (with Kirk Douglas) and The Egyptian (cast as the courtesan Nefer). Marlon Brando reportedly withdrew from a slated starring role in the latter film because he couldn't stand Darvi, whose performances were panned by critics. Harmony in the Zanuck household was short-lived. Darvi was a heavy drinker and gambler, and began an affair with Zanuck, breaking up the marriage. Zanuck pursued Darvi to Paris, but finally tired of paying off Darvi's gambling debts. She committed suicide in 1971. Irregularly cut edges. Adhesive residue at left edge. Corners creased and worn. Light mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
