BEN FARRAR
The lawyer represents his client in this signed handwritten letter to military officer Winfield Scott Hancock
Autograph Letter Signed: “Ben Farrar” in ink. 5x8. Dated November 9, 1876. This letter was sent to Winfield S. Hancock in New York City, New York. In Full: The holder of the first mortgage directs me to say that he will lend on the 3 pieces of property $2500 at 8 percent if the titles are all satisfactory. He has been long coming to this decision as he seems unwilling to lend more above the original $28000. If this is satisfactory please give the necessary directions to your agents here, and I will proceed to prepare the papers + get ready to close.Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886) was a highly successful Union general during the Civil War and a hero of the Battle of Gettysburg (1863). He became the Democratic Party's candidate for President in 1880, losing narrowly to James A. Garfield by a margin of fewer than 40,000 votes out of 9 million cast (Electoral College vote was 214-155). Hancock had impeccable Unionist credentials but was a strong advocate of states' rights, and was considered for the Party's Presidential nominations of 1868, 1872 and 1876 before securing it in 1880. Ben Farrar negotiates a loan agreement via mail in this letter. Merits further research. Mailing creases. Tone marks on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
