BEN H. TURNER
Rare signature from the parachutist and Australian parachute manufacturer on a 3½x5½ postcard bearing his image
Picture post card signed: "With best wishes from/Ben H. Turner", in blue ink, B/w 3½x5½. Ben H. Turner (1910-2001) was parachute stunt jumper in the 1930's and a parachute manufacturer. First jumping in England in the early 1930's, Turner was eventually sent to Australia to make parachutes during World War II, manufacturing an estimated 80,000 during the war's run. However, once the war ended, Turner was no longer needed to make parachutes and switched to producing girls swimsuits with leftover parachute silk. He later sold his share in the company out of financial necessity, and tried a venture into airline ownership, though the business was short lived. He soon after retired from the aviation business and lived out the rest of his life mostly quietly, only making murmurs through Australian with the construction of his manor which incorporated natural rock formations as walls. He passed in 2001 in his home. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly toned. Lightly soiled. Light surface creases. Paper remnants on verso from mounting. Pencil markings on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
