BEN HOGAN. Typed DS: "Ben Hogan" on page 2, 3p, 8½x14, separate sheets. Eastland County, Texas, 1980 November, no date. Oil and gas leases are transferred to Hogan by Jerry E. Wylie of Rising Star, Texas for $10. Headed: "Assignment and Agreement". The property, "330 acres out of the S/2 of Section 3, H. & T. C. Railway Company Survey, Abstract 478, Comanche County, Texas", was transfered to Hogan, who agrees to pay a royalty interest equal to net 3% of all oil and gas produced. Hogan was to "commence or cause to be commenced, operations for the drilling of a well on the above described tract of land...until a total depth of 3,300 feet has been reached or production of gas or oil in commercial quantities is obtained at a lesser depth...." Accompanied by a photocopy of the original document, signed by Wylie (photocopied signature) on November 17. With original receipt for $7 for the "Assignment & Agreement - Jerry E. Wylie To: Ben Hogan" and two photocopies of the receipt. And three unsigned carbon typed letters relating to the document; two letters (dated November 13 and November 17) from Ben Hogan's secretary to Wylie and a letter to the county clerk (dated November 20) regarding the document and the filing fee. Ben Hogan (1912-1997), who had become the U.S. tour's leading money earner by 1940, won the U.S. Open in 1948, 1950, 1951 and 1953, the Professional Golfers' Association championship in 1946 and 1948, the Masters in 1951 and 1953 and the British Open in 1953. He is one of only five golfers to win all four Grand Slam titles; Nicklaus, Player, Sarazen and Woods are the other four. Hogan was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. In 1953, he had opened Ben Hogan Golf, one of his many business interests, which included purchasing gas leases (as evidenced by this document). Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Staple holes at upper left corners and margin. Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper right margin of first page.
