The winner of the 1971 Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Sam the Lion in The Last Picture Show, BEN JOHNSON (1918-1996) was a former ranch hand and rodeo performer before starting in films as a wrangler, stuntman and double for such stars as John Wayne, Gary Cooper and James Stewart. After being cast in such features as Mighty Joe Young (1949), Rio Grande (1950) and Wagon Master (1950), Johnson left Hollywood to return to the rodeo in 1953, but soon returned to movies, appearing in more than 300 films over his career. A star of such films as Shane (1953), Cheyenne Autumn (1964), The Wild Bunch (1969), Chisum (1970), The Sugarland Express (1974) and Radio Flyer (1992), Johnson was also an early TV performer, appearing on shows, primarily Westerns, from 1956-1986. American character actor ROYAL DANO (1922-1994) left home at age 12 - wanting to travel. Making his film debut in 1950 (Undercover Girl) he was never without work, appearing in westerns and mystery films that included Moby Dick (1956), 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (1964), The Undefeated (1969), The Culpepper Cattle Co. (1972), The Oultlaw Josey Wales (1976), and lastly The Dark Half (1993). Dano play Lincoln in the 5-part mini-series Mr. Lincoln (1952-53) on Omnibus that led to his voice portrayal of Lincoln for Walt Disney's "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln" program at the 1964 World's Fair - later moved to Disneyland in 1965 and retaining his voice until 2001. His voice was also used for a revised Lincoln speech in the new "Hall of Presidents" program at Walt Disney World in Florida (1971-1993). Dano is the father of actor Rick Dano and grandfather of Disney Channel star Hutch Dano.
