Price: $1,200.00
BEN TURPIN
6¼x9¼ sepia image of the cross-eyed actor, inscribed to a brother Elk
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To my Bro/Elk/Best Wishes/Ben Turpin". Sepia, 6¼x9¼.
Ben Turpin (1869-1940) made his first film in 1909, but it wasn't until 1917, when he
joined Mack Sennett, that he became a leading comedy star. He enjoyed his greatest success
in a series of parodies of hit movies of the period, lampooning famous screen personalities. His
films included Uncle Tom Without the Cabin (1919), The Shriek of Araby (1923), The Reel
Virginian (1924) and A Harem Knight (1926). He evoked much laughter from the contrast
between his small size and ludicrous face and the dashing, sophisticated characters he portrayed.
He also mastered the art of taking spectacular falls without hurting himself. Turpin had
insured his crossed eyes with Lloyds of London. Toned. Signature light but legible.
Adhesive residue on verso. Fine condition.
