He signs an $8.10 personal check to the Sunset Canyon Country Club in 1921.
Check signed: "Ben Turpin", 8¼x3¼. Los Angeles, California, 1921 November 7. Check no. 367, drawn on Turpin's personal account at the Bank of Italy (Broadway branch, Los Angeles), payable to Sunset Canyon Country Club for $8.10. Filled out and dated in ink by Turpin. (The Bank of Italy was the original name of what is now the Bank of America.) Ben Turpin (1869-1940) made his first film in 1909, but it wasn't until 1917, when he joined Mack Sennett, that he became a leading comedy star. He enjoyed his greatest success in a series of parodies of hit movies of the period, lampooning famous screen personalities. His films included Uncle Tom Without the Cabin (1919), The Shriek of Araby (1923), The Reel Virginian (1924) and A Harem Knight (1926). He evoked much laughter from the contrast between his small size and ludicrous face and the dashing, sophisticated characters he portrayed. He also mastered the art of taking spectacular falls without hurting himself. Turpin had insured his crossed eyes with Lloyds of London. Usual punch cancellations and bank stamps, not near signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
