BEN TURPIN
Turpin signed this contract with agent Ben H. Rothwell in 1929 to emcee a three-day event at the Yost Broadway Theatre in Santa Ana, California
Contract signed: "Ben Turpin", 1 page with blue paper cover, 8x12¾ contract with 9x13½ cover. Accompanied by: Notary slip dated Feb 5, 1929. The slip was affixed to the contract but has been torn off. Turpin signed this contract to appear as Master of Ceremonies for a three-day event, beginning on Feb. 7, 1929 at the Yost Broadway Theatre in Santa Ana, California. This included a rehearsal on the morning of Feb. 7. Turpin would receive $350 plus 35 percent of any gross proceeds exceeding $3,000 for his time. Turpin joined Essanay shortly after the company began operating in 1907, but it wasn't until 1917, when he joined Mack Sennett, that he became a leading comedy star. He enjoyed his greatest success in a series of parodies of hit movies of the period, lampooning famous screen personalities. His films included Uncle Tom Without the Cabin (1919), The Shriek of Araby (1923), The Reel Virginian (1924) and A Harem Knight (1926). He derived much laughter from the contrast between his small size and ludicrous face and the dashing, sophisticated characters he portrayed. Turpin had insured his eyes with Lloyds of London against uncrossing. Lightly toned and folded. Contract attached to cover with two binders at top. Random smudges and corrections. Contract has adhesive residue in lower left corner, while left side of notary slip has been torn off. Folded thrice horizontally, arrived folded in half. Cover is worn and torn along folds. Otherwise in fine condition.
