Price: $90.00
BEN VEREEN. Playbill signed: "Ben/Vereen" on cover, 62p,
5¼x8½. New York, circa March 2001. Program for Fosse at the Broadhurst
Theatre on Broadway. The musical ran from January 14, 1999-August 25, 2001;
Vereen, who joined the cast as a replacement performer and co-starred with Ann
Reinking at the time he signed this program, did not tap dance as tap was one of
the dance styles he had not mastered. The musical was choreographed by Bob
Fosse, who had tapped Vereen for Pippin, for which the actor earned the
1973 Tony Award for Best Actor (Musical). A Broadway presentation of
Fosse, starring Vereen, was filmed for a TV special that aired in
2001. Ben Vereen (born in 1946) had debuted on Broadway at the age of 22 in
Hair and eventually played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, a role
that earned him the Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination. The
versatile actor also appeared in a number of feature films, including Funny
Lady and All that Jazz, and is also known for his role as "Chicken
George" in the TV mini-series, Roots (1977). In 1978, Vereen's
special, Ben Vereen: His Roots, was nominated for eight Emmy
Awards. Ink smudged at the upper loop of the "B". Stray ink marks at upper
border, slightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
