A very rare signature and sentiment from the mobster and thug actor, known for his roles in the television series Adventures of Superman
Autograph sentiment signed: "Best wishes/Ben Welden", in blue ink, 5x3. Known for his consistent portrayal of mobster-type heavys, actor Ben Welden (1901-1997) was the face everyone knew, but no one could name. He began his acting with stage work, appearing in three Broadway plays, but found his niche in television and film with his gangster and thug roles, making over 200 screen and film appearances in his career. He is best remembered for appearing on the 1950's Adventures of Superman eight times as eight separate characters, with each role essentially being a repeat of the one before. He was also one of the ruthless thugs who beat actress Bette Davis in the 1937 film Marked Woman, making her the title named character. He continued acting until 1966, carrying his thug roles until the very end, with his last screen appearance being Foo Young in Batman (1966). Due to his often minor acting roles, Welden purchased and ran the Nutcorn confection company, which was a successful venture and supplemented his acting income. Faint stain on bottom margin of sentiment. Edges slightly worn. Tape on verso. Fine condition.
