Famed operatic soprano Benita Valente (b. 1934) has had a long career singing on stage in operas, lieder, chamber music and oratorio. Best known for her impressive interpretations of Mozart, Handel and Verdi roles, she studied voice at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara with Lotte Lehmann and Martial Singher, later studying at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Margaret Harshaw in 1960; that same year she won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and began touring the world's famous opera houses and festivals. A regular at the Met, Valente is remembered for her roles as Pamina in The Magic Flute, Gilda in Rigoletto, Nanetta in Falstaff, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, and Ilia in Idomeneo. She has collaborated with numerous musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma and Richard Stoltzman, as well as the Julliard and Orion String Quartets; she won a Grammy Award or her recording of Arnold Schoenberg's Quartet No. 2 and a nomination for her recording of Haydn's Seven Last Words of Christ. She currently works as a teacher of vocal masters classes. Slightly toned on verso. Corners rounded. Pencil notes on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
