BENJAMIN BUTTERWORTH
The U.S. Congressman and Patents Commissioner signs his name in black ink
Signature: "Ben Butterworth/ Cincinnati, Ohio" in black ink. 7x3 clipping. Benjamin Butterworth (1837-1898) was a United States Representative from Ohio and Commissioner of Patents. His father was a Virginian planter who released all his slaves in the name of universal liberty, and who later became very involved with the Underground Railroad in Ohio. Butterworth studied law, serving as the U.S. district attorney in 1868, and as a member of the Ohio Senate from 1874 to 1875. In 1878 Butterworth was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving two terms. After his Congressional tenure he went on to serve as regent of the Smithsonian Institution, commissioner of the Northern Pacific Railroad, special government counsel to prosecute South Carolina election cases in 1883, and then was reelected to the House of Representatives in 1884, going on to serve three more terms. In 1896, he was appointed Commissioner of Patents, serving in that until his death two years later. Irregularly cut. Toned. Light surface creases. Pencil notes in top margin in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
