This note is written to a newspaper editor asking him to stop the print of a certain
paragraph
Autograph note signed: “Benjamin De Casseres” in black ink. 5½x3¼. To Mr. Louis Sobol,
postmarked Bronx Cent. Annex, New York, September 7, 1939. In full: “Dear Louis: For
reasons I can't explain here please do not print that paragraph- if you can still stop it. If it is too
late, we'll forget it. It might stir up certain letter-writers. Yours”. Benjamin De Casseres
(1873-1945) was an American journalist, critic, essayist and poet. He began working at the
Philadelphia Press at an early age, but spent most of his professional career in New York
City. De Casseres wrote for The New York Times, The Sun and The New York Herald.
He married the author Bio De Casseres whom he had a romantic relationship with for 16
years prior to their marriage. In 1931, De Casseres published a collection of letters the
couple sent each other during their courtship, titled The Love Letters of a Living Poet. He
wrote many other short works and books, including Mirrors of New York (1925), Anathema!
Litanies of Negation (1928), and The Muse of Lies (1936). Lightly toned. Corners rounded.
Addressed on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
