BENJAMIN F. TRACY. Signature: "B.F. Tracy/Secretary of the Navy/Feb 6th 1893", 3½x2½ card. Benjamin Franklin TRACY (1830-1915) served as President Harrison's only Secretary of the Navy, 1889-1893. Tracy was about to leave office, President Harrison having in November 1892 lost a Presidential election rematch to Grover Cleveland, whom he had ousted from office in 1884. A Union General during the Civil War, Tracy received the Congressional Medal of Honor (1895) for his conduct in the Battle of the Wilderness (1864). Before becoming Navy Secretary, he served as a U.S. District Attorney and on the New York State Court of Appeals. Mounting paper remnants on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
