sign opposite sides of a 6x3 piece of paper.
Signatures: "B. F. Tracy/Secretary of the Navy from/1889 to
1893", and on verso "Alvey A. Adee/Second Assistant Secretary of
State/Washington March 9, 1900" BENJAMIN F. Tracy (1830-1915) served as
President Harrison's only Secretary of the Navy, 1889-1893. A Union General
during the Civil War, Tracy received the Congressional Medal of Honor (1895)
for his conduct in the Battle of the Wilderness (1864). Before becoming Navy
Secretary, he served as a U.S. District Attorney and on the New York State Court
of Appeals. ALVEY A. Adee (1842-1924), expert drafter of
diplomatic messages, treaties and other state papers, served as Acting Secretary
of State at various times during the administrations of eight Presidents.
Officially, career officer Adee served as Second Assistant Secretary of State
1886-1924. Irregular at edges. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine
condition.
