BENJAMIN H. BRISTOW. ALS: "B.H. Bristow", 1p, 5½x8¾. New York, 1889 July 31. To Mr. McCullough. In full: "Herewith is a copy [not included] of the order signed by Judges Jackson & Greshorn at Chicago, & handed to Mr. Daniel, counsel for the Receiver to be entered at Indianapolis, Chicago & Toledo. I am not advised that it has actually been entered though I do not doubt that it has." In 1875, distillers in St. Louis, Chicago, Milwaukee, and elsewhere, had evaded tax through payments to Republican Party funds and individuals. Investigations by Secretary of the Treasury Bristow led to 237 indictments and 110 convictions. President Grant was cleared personally, but the Chief Treasury Clerk and President Grant's private secretary were among the indictments in what has become known as the Whiskey Ring. U.S. Solicitor General from 1870-1872, Bristow served as Secretary of the Treasury from 1874-1876. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the first "B". Several pinhead-size ink stains in blank areas. Overall, fine condition.
