First day cover signed: "Benj.M. Duggar" in black ink. 6½x3¾
commemorative envelope and first day cover celebrating the International Red
Cross, postmarked November 21, 1952 in New York City, New York. Benjamin
Minge Duggar (1872-1956) was an American plant physiologist. After
studying at schools such as Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Harvard University,
Cornell University, as well as abroad in countries including Germany, Italy and
France, Duggar became an expert in botany, holding various positions at
experiment stations and colleges. In 1901, he was appointed physiologist in the
Bureau of Plant Industry at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, later a
Professor of Botany at the University of Missouri, and then Chair of plant
physiology at Cornell. Duggar served as Vice President of the Botanical
Society of America from 1912 to 1914, and eventually action professor of
biological chemistry at the Washington University Medical School. Duggar is
best remembered for his achievement in discovering chlortetracycline
(Auremoycin), the first of the tetracycline antibiotics. His works include
Fungous Diseases of Plants (1909), Plant Physiology
(1911) and Mushroom Growing (1915). Toned. Corners rounded.
