BENJAMIN M. MCKELWAY
The newspaper editor, reporter and chairman of the Washington Star signs this typed letter to a subscriber
Typed letter signed: "BM McKelway" in blue ink. 5¾x7¾. Washington, District of Columbia, January 19, 1967. Typed on letterhead of The Evening Star-The Sunday Star to Miss Corinne R. Manning, in full: "Dear Miss Manning: Thank you for your thoughtful letter about Congressman Powell. I agree that we have not heard the last of this messy business, and we will try to keep alert to reporting the full story as it develops. Yours sincerely". Benjamin Mosby McKelway (1895-1976) was a newspaper editor and businessman. After serving in the US Army during World War I, he became interested in a career in newspaper. McKelway began a practical apprenticeship as news editor and editorial writer with the New Britain Herald in 1919 and 1920. In 1921 he entered what would become his fifty-five-year career with the Washington Star. For the next twenty years he rose through the paper's ranks as reporter, city editor, news editor, managing editor, and associate editor. Selected as the first nonfamily editor in 1946, he retained that position until 1963, when he assumed the title of editorial chairman, which he held for the remainder of his life. He was made president of the Associated Press from 1958 to 1963, president of the Grid-iron Club in 1958, and president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors (1949-1950). Lightly toned. Horizontal crease across center. Affixed to larger sheet. Irregular edges. Newspaper article affixed to verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
