BENNETT CERF
Random House co-founder (and frequent What's My Line?

to him by a Los Angeles autograph hunter.
Autograph note signed"Here you are -/Good Luck/Bennett
Cerf"in red ink. 1 page, 8½x10¾, with three binder holes along right
edge. Cerf wrote this note in response to a typed letter by Barbara Stephens of
Los Angeles, California, dated Feb. 9, 1967, in full:"Dear Mr. Cerf, As
a Polio Patient ( of ten years) I enjoy collecting autographs of amous people
for a hobby. I would be very honored to have your autograph among my collection.
Thank You:". Cerf added an autograph postscript in blue ink: "P. S. Have
watched you on 'Whats [sic] My Line' for years. I even like your jokes???
I love to read & want to read your latest book. Best Wishes to you &
your family!" Cerf replied to this postscript with an autograph "Thank
you!", also in red ink. Cerf (1898-1971, born in New York City)
was a publisher who co-founded Random House, Inc. with Donald Knopfler in
1925, when they bought the Modern Library of Cerf's former employer, Boni &
Liveright. Most people probably know his face from his frequent appearances on
What's My Line? (1950-1967). Lightly toned. Staple holes at top edge.
