BENNETT CERF
Publisher Bennett Cerf signed this typed rejection letter for a proposed
book, Madison Avenue Bartlett's, in 1962. He says the book will find a
ready market, but Random House is not the proper publisher for it, adding "I
didn't even publish my own compilations under our imprint".
Typed letter signed "Bennett Cerf" in blue ink. 1 page, 5½x8½, on
Random House letterhead. Oct. 1, 1962. Addressed to Mr. Joseph H.
Epstein, Jr., Walker Saussy, Inc. New Orleans, Louisiana. In full: "Dear
Mr. Epstein: thank you for letting me see the enclosed excerpts from your
proposed MADISON AVENUE BARTLETT'S. I think this is a book that will find a
ready market, but I am sorry to say that we are not the right publishers for it.
This kind of book is rather out of our line. I didn't even pub-lish my own
compilations under our imprint, but preferred turning them over to Doubleday or
Simon Schuster, who do a better job with this sort of thing than we do. I
strongly suggest that you follow the same procedure. Good luck! Cordially,
Bennett Cerf".Cerf (1898-1971, born in New York City) was a
publisher who co-founded Random House, Inc. with Donald Knopfler in 1925,
when they bought the Modern Library of Cerf's former employer, Boni &
Liveright. Most people probably know his face from his frequent appearances on
What's My Line? (1950-1967). Lightly creased. Paper clip impression in
top left corner. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
