BENNY GOODMAN
Benny Goodman signs a contract with the William Morris Agency about payment.
Contract signed: "Benny Goodman" for Park Recording Company. Letter form, 1p, 8½x11. No place, 1958 March 26. To William Morris Agency, New York. In part: "In consideration of your services rendered and to be rendered in connection with the finalizing of a contract between Record Manufacturing Company...and us, dated March 26th, 1958...commencing on or about May 5th, 1958, we agree to pay you, and you agree to accept as your compensation, the following upon payment to us: The Sum of Two Hundred Fifty ($250.) Dollars for each single concert; The sum of Three Hundred ($300.) Dollars for each double concert". After playing with bands in the 1920s and early 1930s, Benny Goodman (1909-1986) organized his own orchestra in 1934. In 1935, he formed the Benny Goodman Trio with Gene Krupa and Teddy Wilson; it became a quartet in 1936 when Lionel Hampton joined it. Goodman was the first major white bandleader to integrate black and white musicians. Performing for radio, motion pictures and records, Goodman's orchestra became nationally famous. Composers Béla Bartók, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein and Morton Gould wrote music for him. Lightly creased. Staple holes at upper left, file holes at top margin. Overall, fine condition.
