Bandleader Benny Goodman signed this document in 1951, agreeing to
let Columbia Records lower the royalties he received on a 1950 recording of
Aaron Copland's Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra.
Document signed"Benny Goodman" and by a representative
of Columbia Records. 1 page, 8½x11, on Columbia Records letterhead with two file
holes at top edge, thin paper. March 28, 1951. This document lowered the
royalties that Goodman received from Columbia for a recording of Aaron Copland's
Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra, which he recorded on Nov. 17, 1950.
Goodman has signed a contract with Columbia two months prior to this performance
on Aug. 1, 1950. After playing with bands in the 1920s and early 1930s,
Goodman (1909-1986, born in Chicago, Illinois) organized his own
orchestra in 1934. In 1935, he formed the Benny Goodman Trio with Gene Krupa and
Teddy Wilson; it became a quartet in 1936, when Lionel Hampton joined.
Goodman was the first major white bandleader to integrate black and white
musicians. Performing for radio, motion pictures and records, Goodman's
orchestra became nationally famous. Composers Béla Bartók, Aaron Copland,
Leonard Bernstein and Morton Gould wrote music for him. Lightly toned and
creased. Light tears at top, left and right edges. Missing top left corner.
