BENNY GOODMAN
1972 copy of the soundtrack to The Benny Goodman Story, signed with bandleader Benny Goodman's "Best wishes" in purple ink
Record album cover signed "To Joni/Best wishes/Benny Goodman" in purple ink. Color, 12½x12½. Copy of the soundtrack to the 1955 movie The Benny Goodman Story by Goodman and other jazz artists, including Ferd "Jelly Roll" Morton, Johnny Mercer and Count Basie. With two 11¾-inch diameter records. ©1972 MCA Records Inc. After playing with bands in the 1920s and early 1930s, Goodman (1909-1986, born in Chicago, Illinois) organized his own orchestra in 1934. In 1935, he formed the Benny Goodman Trio with Gene Krupa and Teddy Wilson; it became a quartet in 1936, when Lionel Hampton joined. Goodman was the first major white bandleader to integrate black and white musicians. Performing for radio, motion pictures and records, Goodman's orchestra became nationally famous. Composers Béla Bartók, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein and Morton Gould wrote music for him. Cover is lightly toned and creased. Light tears on left side on verso. Lightly scuffed left and right edges. Lightly rounded and worn corners. Light impressions from records. One side of second record is lightly scratched. Otherwise in fine condition.
