lower margin. Former Detroit cab driver Benny Parsons (1941-2007) won spots in
both the U.S. and international motor sports Halls of Fame for a NASCAR
career that included 21 wins and 283 top-ten finishes. Over a nine-year
stretch (1972-1980), he never finished lower than fifth in a race. After
retiring from racing in 1988, Parsons became a broadcaster, first with
ESPN and, beginning in 2001, with NBC and TNT. His coverage earned him the
nickname "the Professor", and Parsons won an Emmy Award in 1996. In 2006,
Parsons began chemotherapy after being diagnosed with lung cancer. Continuing to
call races during his treatment, Parsons was hospitalized on December 26, 2006.
He died on January 16, 2007 at the age of 65. Fine condition.
