BERNADINE BAILEY
The children's book writer types a letter to her dear friend and
associate as she travels Finland
Typed Letter Signed: "Bernadine Bailey," in black ink. 8½x11. 1 page.
Letter head from Hotelli Karelia in Helsinki, Helsignfors, Finland.
July 14, 1938. In part: "My dear Mrs. Taylor: What a dear you were to
suggest that I look up your aunt when I was in Copenhagen. I wrote her a note a
few days before I arrived, asking when it would be convenient for me to call and
extend greetings from America. When I reached Copenhagen, I found a letter from
her son (a very charming young man, by the way), inviting me to dinner at their
home on the following Saturday..." The letter continues to report on the writer's
journey, including remarks of cities, seas, and ships. Bernadine Bailey
(1901-1995) was an American short story and children's book writer who
worked as the directing staff editor of Childcraft, an educational series
for young children. One of the first and best books published, The
Follett Picture-Story Book of Indians (1936), is Bailey original,
exemplifying her delicate and remarkable prowess in children book writing. She
continued to publish books throughout the 1970's for Childcraft.
