"Evening News" political cartoonist sends a fan his thanks, signs his
name underneath
Autograph letter signed: "Bernard/ Cookson" in black ink. 1
page, 7x5½. Clipped pieces affixed to irregularly cut piece of paper. May 22,
1973. London, England. In full:"Dear Victor Croxford, Many thanks for
your kind letter. It was most interesting. I have autographed the newspaper
clipping as you suggested. Kindest regards". Cartoonist Bernard Cookson
(b. 1937) began his art studies at the Manchester Art School, earning a job
as a visualizer in an advertising agency. After a stint with the National Guard,
Cookson published his first cartoon in the "Daily Mirror" in 1965, also
contributed a drawing the magazine "Punch". Cookson spent the next few
years as a freelance cartoonist until being appointed the social/political
cartoonist for the Evening News in 1969, a position he held until 1976. In
1982 he became a sometime political cartoonist for "The Sun", as well as
for the "Spectator", "Daily Express", and more. In 2009 he
published a book titled "The Fifth Day" about a plan to steal the
Shroud of Turin. Heavily creased. Corners rounded. Edges frayed. Lightly
stained. Otherwise, fine condition.
