Conductor who served Mussolini
Signature: " Bernardino Molinari/Hollywood Bowl/August - 1935 -XIII", 6x4¼ album leaf. [XIII is a fascist date signifying the 13th year since Mussolini came to power.]. Italian violinist and conductor Bernardo Molinari (1880-1952) headed the Santa Cecilia Academy Orchestra in Rome for many years (1912-1944). In the 1930s, he performed frequently in the United States. As an advisor to the Corporation of New Music, Molinari helped this organization, established in 1923, to prescribe guidelines for acceptable music in the fascist era. He also used his authority to hinder the careers of musicians he disliked. In his published letters (translated into English by Harry Sachs, 2006), Arturo Toscanini bitterly attacked Molinari and other musicians he associated with fascism. When Rome was liberated by Allied forces in 1944, Molinari was reportedly assaulted by musicians in his orchestra and had to be rescued by officers of the US Eighth Army who had heard him perform in America before the war. Recordings of Vivaldi's works, with Molinari as violinist and conductor (1942), have been re-issued. Binder holes near left edge. Light creases in right corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
