BERNHARD ERNST VON BÜLOW
Envelope addressed by one of Otto von Bismarck's confidantes
Autograph envelope signed "Bülow", 4¼x2¾ envelope fragmentmountedin 6x4 card. Addressed in Bülow's hand: "Lt. Gn. Sir Henry Taylor/Windsor Castle". Taylor (1775-1839) was a British military officer and politician who was, among other things, first Private Secretary to the Sovereign for King George III and William IV. Von Bülow (1815-1879) was a Danish politician who became a confidant of Otto von Bismarck, who engineered the unification of Germany between 1862 and 1890 and became the first chancellor of the second German Empire in 1871. Bismarck made him secretary of state for foreign affairs in 1873 and his lieutenant in the secretary ship for the Empire's foreign affairs in 1877. Von Bülow was very loyal to Bismarck and, in 1878, was one of the Prussian representatives at the congress of Berlin, which reorganized the Balkans in the wake of the 1877-78 Russo-Turkish War. His son, Bernhard von Bülow, eventually became chancellor of the German Empire in 1900. Lightly toned, spotted and rippled. Adhesive showing through card, which does not touch signature or address. Otherwise, fine condition.
