German silent film star, cast as Death by Fritz Lang
Postcard Photograph inscribed and signed: "Bernhard Goetzke". Sepiatone, 3½x5½. Previously a stage actor, Bernhard Goetzke (1884-1964) rose to stardom in German silent films. After a prominent role in the epic The Indian Tomb (1921), he was cast by director Fritz Lang in a series of films, most memorably as Death in Destiny (1921). Film critic Michael Koller had this praise for the performance: "Goetzke's wraith-like features, his thinning, lanky colourless hair, his sunken cheeks, and his fatigued, emotionless stare make him perfect as 'The Weary Death'." Goetzke was in demand for European films of the 1920s, including Italy's The Last Days of Pompeii and Hitchcock's The Mountain Eagle (both 1926). He played mostly supporting roles in talking films of subsequent decades, making his last appearance in The Cold Heart (1950). Pinhead sized spot at top center. Slightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
