BERNICE O'NEAL
Stunning bare-shouldered studio photo, inscribed and signed
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Chauncy/With the best of/every thing/always/Bernice O'Neal". Sepia, 8x10. Photo: The Crosbys - Cleveland. Ink note on verso (unknown hand): "O'Neal Sisters with Harry Carroll - The Crosbys - Cleveland, B. F. Palace Theatre". Harry Carroll (1892-1962) was a prominent Broadway performer, lyricist and arranger who wrote such hits as "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" and "Trail of the Lonesome Pine" and "By the Beautiful Sea." He wrote lyrics for the Ziegfeld Follies, and produced many vaudeville shows. Cleveland's Palace Theatre, which opened in 1922, was the main theatre in B. F. Keith's vaudeville chain, hosting top acts such as Fanny Brice, Bing Crosby and Houdini. Bernice O'Neal and The O'Neal Sisters were probably part of this entertainment network. Accordingly, this piece merits further research. Corner creased and lightly chipping away. Lightly toned. Signature lightly beaded but still legible. Mounting residue and pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Photographers stamp on verso. Otherwise fine condition.
