BERNIE KOPELL
Kopell handwrote and signed this letter to Phyllis Diller on his personalized stationery. In it, he thanks Diller for sketching a portrait of him and talks about "our beliefs in science of mind".
Autograph letter signed "Bernie" in blue ink. 1 page, 8½x11, on his personal stationery with his Tarzana, California address. Tarzana, California, no date. Addressed to comedienne and actress Phyllis Diller. Begins: "Dear Phyllis". In full: "How flattered I am that you thought to make a sketch of me. Gosh, if I looked that good, I could be a leading-man today! It really proves to me that I'm in your conciousness [sic], as you are in mine. Whenever your name comes up or I see a picture of you or think of you it is an affirmation & a fortification of our beliefs in science of mind. That was the first thing you & I ever talked about. Seeing you has always strengthened, fortified, & affirmed (sounds like winners at Hollywood Park!) The sketch is in a place of honor in our home. I will always cherish it. With my dearest love & gratitude, til the next time". Handwritten postscript: "(Yolanda sends her best, too.)" Diller, an accomplished artist, is known for her celebrity portraits. "Yolanda" was Kopell's first wife, Yolanda Veloz, to whom he was married from 1975 until their divorce in 1995. Yolanda, the daughter of dance team members Frank Veloz and Yolanda Casazza, had met Kopell while appearing on episodes of the 1973 TV series, Needles and Pins. She left acting in 1975 to become a real estate agent. KOPELL, born in New York City in 1933, is best known for his role as Doctor Adam Bricker on the TV series, The Love Boat, which was telecast on ABC from 1977-1986. By the time he took the role, Kopell was no stranger to television, having been a regular in several series, including That Girl (1966-1971, as Jerry Bauman), The Doris Day Show (1970-1971), Needles and Pins (1973) and When Things Were Rotten (1975), as well as a recurring role on Get Smart (1967-1969) and guest starring roles from 1962 (The Jack Benny Program). Kopell, a master of dialects, had made his film debut in 1963 and has appeared in several feature films, including The Thrill of It All (1963), Good Neighbor Sam (1964) and 2005's The Cutter, but he is best known for his television work, including several made-for-TV movies. Comedienne DILLER, born Phyllis Ada Driver in Lima, Ohio in 1917, known for her outrageous appearance, zany outfits, distinctive laugh and a stand-up act that featured frequent references to her fictional husband, "Fang", and zingers about her sex appeal and numerous plastic surgeries, got her big break in March 1955 (at age 37), when she debuted at San Francisco's Purple Onion club. A subsequent appearance on The Tonight Show hosted by Jack Paar launched her national career, which got a big boost after Bob Hope saw Diller in a Washington, D.C. club. A favorite of the comedian, Diller would appear in three of Hope's films and 23 of his TV specials. Diller, who recorded her first comedy record album in 1959, took her groundbreaking "funny hausfrau" act to nightclubs and television variety shows and specials and she also appeared on the big screen. Her feature film credits include Splendor in the Grass (1961), The Fat Spy (1966), Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number! (1966), The Sunshine Boys (1975) and The Silence of the Hams (1994), and she provided the voice of the Queen in A Bug's Life (1998). By 2000, the comedienne, who had trained as a concert pianist before her marriage (1939-1965) to Sherwood Anderson Diller, had appeared as a piano soloist with 100 symphony orchestras across the U.S. Despite retiring from nightclub/stage tours in May 2002 at the age of 84, Diller continued to make films (Motorcross Kids, 2004; Forget About It, 2005) and occasionally appear on TV programs, including two episodes of 7th Heaven (2002, 2003) and a guest shot on The Wayne Brady Show (2004). Lightly creased. Folded twice and unfolded. Fine condition.
