B/w, 8x10. Thomas Bertram "Bert" Lance (1931-2013) was a Georgia
businessman and advisor to Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter in 1976. He
served as Director of the Office of Management and Budget from January to
September of 1977, but resigned in the face of charges of malfeasance while he
had been Chairman of the Board of Georgia's Calhoun National Bank. The
investigation won journalist William Safire a Pulitzer Prize, and spawned a
series of skits on Saturday Night Live featuring John Belushi as Lance. Lance
was cleared of all charges in a 1981 trial, and resumed active political
involvement as Chairman of the Georgia Democratic Party and as campaign adviser
to Walter Mondale and Jesse Jackson. Lance faced new accusations of
improprieties during the BCCI scandal of the early 1990s. Lightly creased at
corners and edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
