Bert Sugar on Boxing: the Best of Sport's Most Notable Writer, by Bert
Randolph Sugar. Guilford, Connecticut: The Lyons Press. Bert Sugar (b.
1937-2012) passed the bar exam and worked for 10 years for an advertising
agency, writing the well-known jingle, "N E S T L E S - Nestles makes the very
best." Then he turned to his real passion, sports, editing Boxing
Illustrated and The Ring (and writing a sports column for the
cigar enthusiasts magazine, Smoke. He has written over 80 books,
most devoted to boxing but also including a volume on the baseball hall of fame.
He has played himself in several films, including Rocky Balboa
(1986). Sugar was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005.
The Mark Shapiro in the inscription is probably the controversial sports
broadcasting executive of that name, associated with ESPN, the NFL Network, and
the Washington Redskins). Fine condition.
