BERTRAM ROSS
The Martha Graham dancer and choreographer signs a holiday card to John Willis, Editor of Theatre World
Autograph letter signed: "Bertram", in blue ink, 1 page, 6¼x8¾. In full: "Dear Jack, I never did thank you for your sweetness in remembering my birthday - I unsuccessfully tried by phone - So let me thank you now and wish you the most glorious and wonder filled new year with everything you wish for yourself. Love". Bertram Ross (1920-2003) was a dancer and choreographer popular for his partnership with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Originally pursuing a career as a painter, Ross was inspired by seeing performances of the Graham Dance Company, and joined the company in 1949. He was named co-director of the company in 1966, but left later in 1973 after a new director was brought into the company. After leaving, Ross began a career as a singer and a choreographer, and continued as such until his passing in 2003. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Large crease in left margin. Corners lightly worn. Slightly soiled. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
