The award-winning English novelist extends her best wishes.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "with all best wishes/Beryl Bainbridge/Camden Town. May 1990", 6x4. Dame Beryl Bainbridge (1932-2010) began as an actress, but found her greatest success as a novelist. Her early novels were realistic psychological fiction, acclaimed by critics but not best sellers. Injury Time won the Whitbread Prize in 1977. She wrote the screenplay for the film Sweet William (1979), based on her 1977 novel. Another of her books, An Awfully Big Adventure (1989) also became a 1995 film. In the 1990s Bainbridge turned to historical fiction, winning a much wider audience in the process. Award-winning novels from this period include Every Man for Himself (1996, about the Titanic disaster), and Master Georgie (1998, set in the Crimean War). Her final novel, The Girl in the Polka Dot Dress, about a mysterious woman associated with the assassination of Robert Kennedy, was published posthumously in 2011. Honored with a DBE (2000), she was often called "the Dame of Camden Town", after the entertainment and counterculture London neighborhood where she passed her final years. Lightly toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) at top edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
