Myerson". 6½x3½ envelope. 18-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Portland, ME
April 24, 1981, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE Honoring America the Beautiful. Bess
Myerson (1924-2014), the first Jewish Miss America (1945),
appeared on a number of television game shows, including The Big Payoff (1951),
I've Got a Secret (1958-1967) and To Tell the Truth (1967), and co-hosted
Candid Camera (1966-1967). She later served as New York City's
Commissioner of Consumer Affairs (1969-1973) and Commissioner of Cultural
Affairs (1983-1987). A close friend of New York Mayor Ed Koch, she ran
for the US Senate in 1980, but lost in the primary. Her indictment in a tax
fraud and bribery scandal ended her public career, even though she was
acquitted. She remained active in civil rights and philanthropic causes. Pencil
