BESSIE CLAYTONThe talented dancer who was a mainstay on Broadway and in vaudeville beginning in the Gay Nineties signs this slip of paper Autograph Sentiment Signed: “Sincerely Yours/ Bessie Clayton” 4¾x2. Bessie Clayton (1875-1948) was a dancer who performed on Broadway and on the vaudeville circuits beginning at the turn of the 19th century. Known for the way in which she seamlessly melded stage dancing and classical ballet, her signature number comprised descending a staircase, whirling around as she made her way down the steps. She starred in many of Charles Hoyt's productions such as A Trip to Chinatown, and went on to figure prominently in the shows of Joe Weber and Lew Fields. In the 1909 Ziegfeld Follies, Clayton was one of the featured dancers. Clayton was married twice: her first husband was famed choreographer Julian P. Mitchell, whom she divorced, and her second was Bert Cooper, her former manager. Lightly toned. Faint scuffing and smudging of ink throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
