BETSY DRAKE
Signed publicity photo of the French-born American actress and writer, who was once
married to Cary Grant
Photograph Signed: "All good wishes/Betsy Drake", in black ink. B/w, 8x10. Born in Paris,
France to American expatriates, Betsy Drake (1923-2015) and her family were forced to
move back to the US after the stock market crash of 1929. The eldest, she spent her
childhood bouncing from city to city looking for work and education, and by her early
twenties she moved to New York City. There she met playwright Horton Foote who gave
her a role in his play Only the Heart, later leading to a Hollywood contract. However, Drake
left Hollywood for London in 1947 to star on stage. There she met Cary Grant, and with
his insistence, she signed a film contract with RKO pictures. Between 1948 and 1965
Drake appeared in a nearly dozen on-screen works, including Every Girl Should Be
Married (1948), Dancing in the Dark (1959) and Room for One More (1952). Grant and
Drake were married on Christmas Day in 1949 (with Howard Hughes as Grant's best man)
and the couple stayed together until 1962. Drake quit films after 1965 but continued as
writer, publishing the book Children, You Are Very Little (1971). She has also earned a
Master of Education degree from Harvard University. Fine condition.
