BETSY WYETH
Signed handwritten letter inquiring about the price of a letter written by her father in law
Autograph Letter signed: "Betsy W.", 1 page, 5¾x7¾. No place, no date. However, the original mailing envelope (not included here) dates this letter from 1980. To "Dear Kaye Slotnick", in full: "Concerning the N. C. Wyeth letter - could you give me some idea of the price?"  Betsy James (1923-2020) met painter Andrew Wyeth, the son of painter N. C. Wyeth, when the Wyeths were summering in Maine, and the couple married the following year (1940). Andrew Wyeth, an austere realist painter able to capture powerful emotions in simple scenes, was already on the way to becoming one of America's most loved artists. Until Andrew's death in 2009, Betsy Wyeth was his companion and helpmate, handling his business affairs and assisting his career in other ways. (For example, Betsy introduced him to Christina Olson, his subject in many paintings, including Christina's World, 1948. She also helped him refurbish the cluster of 18th century Pennsylvania buildings which he immortalized as The Mill.) N. C. Wyeth, Andrew's father, died in 1945 when the car he was driving stalled on a railroad track. Horizontal fold creases. Fine condition.
