Autograph letter signed "Bette Davis -". 2 pages, 4x5¼, 1 page folded, front and verso, on stationery of Peckett's-on-Sugar-Hill in Franconia, New Hampshire. Dated "October fourth". In full: "Dear Mr. Smith - I thank you very much for your invitation - to 'add my footprints' - My plans are so indefinite will have to arrange it with you at a later date - I hope I will be able to - think it would be good fun -". Screen legend Davis (1908-1989, born Ruth Elizabeth Davis in Lowell, Massachusetts) has over 120 movies and TV shows to her credit, beginning in 1931 with the female lead in Bad Sister. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards for Best Actress, Davis won in 1936 for her role as Joyce Heath in Dangerous and in 1939 for portraying Julie Marsden in Jezebel. She was also nominated for her roles as Mildred Rogers in Of Human Bondage (1934), Judy Traherne in Dark Victory (1939), Leslie Crosbie in The Letter (1940), Regina Giddens in The Little Foxes (1941), Charlotte Vale in Now, Voyager (1941), Fanny Trellis Skeffington in Mr. Skeffington (1944), Margo Channing in All About Eve (1950), Margaret Elliot in The Star (1952) and Jane Hudson in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Handwriting, but not signature, has smeared and haloed lightly but is legible. Staple hole in top left corner. Otherwise in fine condition.
