BETTY COMPSON
Color image of the silent film star, wearing a sun bonnet
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Constance
Robertson/from/Betty Compson". Color, 8x8¼. Blond beauty Betty Compson
(1897-1974) began appearing in silent films in 1915, featured in a series of
comedy shorts. Her performance opposite Lon Chaney in The Miracle Man
(1919) was her breakthrough role, and she was one of the highest paid stars of
the 1920s. Beginning with Prisoners of Love (1921), she began
producing some of her own films. Compson was nominated for a Best Actress
Oscar for The Barker (1928). She made a successful transition to
talking pictures, but appeared in fewer of these. After her final film, Here
Comes Trouble (1948), she retired from acting and pursued a successful
business career. Edges and corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine
condition.
