BETTY FURNESS
The actress and consumer advocate who worked under President Lyndon B. Johnson
signed this card in pencil and gave it to Elsie Myrus, wife of "the man with the x-ray
eyes"
Autograph Note Signed: "To Elsie - / Best - / Betty Furness". 4x4½. On verso of a question card
from a business called The Cafe Lamaze. Although she found modest success as an actress
on film (Shadow of Doubt, 1935; Swing Time, 1936) and Broadway, Betty Furness
(1916-1994) gained fame for her work as a commercial spokesperson, particularly for
Westinghouse. She held several important appointments in the consumer protection field
during LBJ's administration. In 1974, while serving as Consumer Affairs Director at a
New York NBC affiliate, Furness began her stint as a consumer reporter and advocate
with The Today Show (1974-1992). The actress is most remembered for her consumer
advocacy work on the screen and in the Capitol, but she also appeared in dozens of screen
productions. This card is from the personal collection of Elsie Myrus, the wife
of the mental telepathist. Myrus, "the man with the X-ray eyes", claimed to be a
"wizard of mental telepathy". Those attending his show were invited to submit
questions to Myrus, in which his wife often requested autographs from celebrities
attending his Hollywood show. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
