BETTY GRABLE and JACKIE COOGAN
Grable and Coogan have signed in opposite orientations, appropriate - considering their short marriage.
Signatures: "Betty Grable" and "Jackie Coogan", 4x2¾ irregularly cut slip of paper. Chosen by the GIs in World War II as their number one "pin-up girl", BETTY GRABLE (1916-1973), the most popular pin-up girl of World War II, appeared in a series of musicals and dramas in the 1940s and early 1950s. Fox publicity insured her legs with Lloyds of London for one million dollars. Grable and Coogan had a short, unhappy marriage (1937-1939). Grable married was married to trumpeter-bandleader Harry James from 1943 until they divorced in 1965. Child actor JACKIECOOGAN (1914-1984), a vaudeville stage performer since age four, was tapped by Charlie Chaplin to appear in A Day's Pleasure in 1919. Two years later, Coogan starred with Chaplin in his masterpiece, The Kid. Coogan's other film credits include Oliver Twist (1922), Tom Sawyer (1930), Huckleberry Finn (1931), The Buster Keaton Story (1957), Girl Happy (1965), The Shakiest Gun in the West (1968), Cahill, United States Marshal (1973) and Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1976). During his marriage to Grable, Coogan was preoccupied with suing his parents for squandering the money he had earned as a child actor. He received only a modest settlement, but California passed legislation, called the Coogan Act, to protect future young actors. On the small screen, Coogan is perhaps best remembered for his role as Uncle Fester on The Addams Family (1964-1966). Coogan's signature upside down from Grable's. Paper thinned on verso from prior mounting. Otherwise, fine condition.
