BEVERLEY NICHOLS Handwritten letter from the English author, penned in blue ink Autograph Letter signed: “Beverley Nichols”, in blue ink, 3x1½. England 1974 February. Letterhead: “Sudbrook Cottage/ Ham Common/ Surrey”. No greeting. In part: “With all good wishes from a rather ancient British author, who still survives, in spite of the fact that he has published 54 books, many plays, and approximately 6,000 articles…”. A prolific writer who produced more than 60 books and plays on all kinds of subjects, John Beverley Nichols (1898-1983) was best known for his gardening books. After graduating from Oxford University, Nichols began writing for a number of reputable London publications, and his gossip column became wildly popular. One of his best-received works was Down the Garden Path (1932), a bestseller at the time that has been in print steadily since its original publication. Nichols also wrote A Case of Human Bondage (1966), a novel critical of William Somerset Maugham, and the highly-controversial Father Figure (1972). In addition to writing, Nichols appeared in the 1931's Glamour, a film that is now considered lost. Corners lightly worn. Toned. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Horizontal mailing fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
